This article contains some great casting tips:
Overhead Casting
The following tips are taken from the 'Lefty Kreh 5 Principles' book:
- The longer you move your fishing rod through an arc the better as it helps you make the cast
.
- You have to get the line moving before you can make a forward or back cast. Then on the backcast, the very end of the line has to be lifted out of the water before making the cast.
- The fly will be going in the same direction that you accelerate in, then stop, the tip of the rod at the very end of the cast.
- The size of the loop during the cast is determined by how far and how fast the rod tip is moved (and with a very quick stop) at the end of the cast.
- You can't move your rod hand well enough behind your body if you start the cast with your thumb positioned on the very top of the rod. You must hold the rod in a normal way and then you have to rotate your thumb about 45 degrees away from your body.
These tips are taken from the book by Michael Marshall:
Training -
Put a three inch wide brush into water and have a go at 'flicking' water droplets at least 20 feet, keep practising.
Stance -
Stand up at an angle of fifteen to twenty degrees off-square to the target. Place your left foot forward and point it at the target. Put your right foot square to your shoulders. Now hold the rod at an angle of fifteen degrees to the vertical.
Action -
Use the words ' Pull, flick, w-a-i-t, push, flick, w-a-i-t' to get the perfect timing needed. Make sure you avoid any shoulder-swing as it completely ruins the straightness and alignment of the cast.
